1. Sugar Beach is the Longest Beach in Maui

Stretching nearly 5 miles, Sugar Beach is Maui’s longest uninterrupted shoreline. It runs from North Kihei to Ma‘alaea, offering a peaceful escape with minimal crowds.

2. It’s Named After Maui’s Sugarcane Industry

This scenic stretch got its name from the sugarcane plantations that once dominated the island. Historical remnants of the industry, like the 1899 wharf, can still be found on the southern end near Ma‘alaea.

3. The Beach is Perfect for Morning Strolls

Mornings here are calm and quiet, making it one of the best spots on the island for walking or jogging along the water. Plus, the cooler temperatures make early walks even more enjoyable. In the afternoon, however, you'll want to be sure to bring an umbrella and sunscreen as there's not a lot of shade available.

Of course, the best way to stay cool is by splashing in the water. If you're traveling with little ones, though, it will be very important to make sure you come prepared with ways to beat the heat.

4. Kealia Pond is a Neighboring Wildlife Refuge

Adjacent to Sugar Beach is Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge, home to native Hawaiian birds like the Hawaiian stilt (ae‘o) and coot (‘alae ke‘oke‘o). A boardwalk trail allows you to observe these birds in their natural habitat.

If you’re visiting on the first Saturday of the month, be sure to plan a visit. From 9 AM to 3 PM every month, the refuge hosts guided walks, educational crafts, and family-friendly activities everyone will enjoy.

5. Whale Watching is Possible Right from the Shore

From December to April, North Pacific humpback whales migrate to Hawaiian waters, and Sugar Beach offers prime whale-watching opportunities without needing a boat. Look for spouts and breaches just offshore!

6. It’s One of the Best Places for Stand-Up Paddling

Due to its typically gentle waves, Sugar Beach is an excellent place for stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). Rentals and lessons are available nearby for beginners.

7. Afternoon Winds Make It a Windsurfing Hotspot

While mornings are calm, afternoon trade winds pick up, attracting windsurfers and kitesurfers. The winds can be strong, so beginners should stick to early hours, but regardless of skill, you can still enjoy watching the high-flying thrills of other riders from the shore.

8. Sugar Beach is One of the Best Beaches for Canoe Paddling

The Kihei Canoe Club, located at the southern end of Sugar Beach, offers visitors a chance to experience traditional Hawaiian outrigger canoe paddling. This club preserves the ancient Hawaiian practice of wa‘a (canoe) culture, and visitors can participate in paddling sessions on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. It's a fantastic way to connect with Hawaiian history while enjoying the waters of Ma‘alaea Bay.

Note - public restrooms and showers are also available near the canoe club, making this a popular entrance to the beach if you're planning on spending the day.
